I have been trying to find somewhere to put my little girl’s hair bows for 2 years now. I finally resorted to hanging a belt on the wall and placing them on there. I just couldn’t find one that I really liked that wouldn’t stand out in her room as a “hair accessory sore thumb”.
When I was in Texas, I found some super cute fabric and I knew I would either use it for this purpose or to make a bulletin board. When I was at my other job, ruler of the rentals, I found an old window in our storage area. It was very dirty and the glass was already broken out of it. I took it home to see if it would be the right size and it was. So this is what I did yesterday:
First I had to clean off all the cobwebs and dirt. I also checked the window to make sure there was not any glass left on it. Here is the window before. The top layer of distressed paint is a faded red; therefore, I decided not to even paint it. I think it will look great with all the bright pink in the bedroom.
Here is a close up of the condition of the window. Very naturally distressed. The window also had a few screws left that stuck out. I decided to leave them to hang hair bands and hats on.
Next, I stapled chicken wire (that I had cut off of a roll) on the back of the window frame. The chicken wire will actually serve as the portion that the bows will clip onto.
The chicken wire also helps the window frame become more stable. Next step, was to place the fabric on the back of the window frame on top of the chicken wire. Then staple it as well. I tried to get the fabric as tight as possible without ripping it, so that it wouldn’t sag after a few months of use. I had to stretch a lot of canvases in Undergraduate school, so I have a little bit of experience in this department.
After stapling the fabric, I placed 2 picture hangers on the back and then I hung it in SR’s room.
Now, I have a place to hang her bows, hair bands, hats, belts, and bracelets. I will also get some clothes line pins and put some of her art or pictures on the left side to display her talents.
I picked up another old window frame from our storage and am contemplating on whether to make a mirror out of it to hang above our bed in our master bedroom. Another project for another weekend.
